Do Christians Shine?
Matthew Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
I got a call from a friend of mine Donnie Heifner recently and he asked me a question. He said do Christians shine? I said what? He said do Christians shine? I said what are you talking about? He said he has had several people walk up to him and say, “you’re a Christian aren’t you?” He said yeah how did you know? “They said because you are shining!”
I said, “ yeah we do shine, “I remembered when I first got saved and my wife took one look at me and said, “What’s going on,” I said . “what do you mean “ and she said, “there’s something different about you!” Then I remembered when Moses came down off Mt. Sinai with the two tablets in his hands that his face was shining. I told Donnie yeah we do shine!
In Matthew Chapter 5 14-16 we find one of the most quoted verses in the bible.
You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
This may be one of the first verses you learned in school. No doubt you sang the song: This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. Jesus said that we (His disciples) are the light of the world. We must not hide that light under a bushel or in a church building.
What does Jesus mean by light? Jesus also calls Himself "the light of the world." John calls Him "the life that is the light of men," "the light that shines in the darkness" (John 1:4-5). The light in us is His light, the Holy Spirit that lives within us. The apostle Paul speaks of "the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:4). We have that light shining through our lives if our actions reflect the nature of Christ, His love, compassion, and forgiveness. His light shines through our attitudes, words, and deeds. When people see that our lives have been changed they will see Jesus in us, and see the power of God at work in us.
Hide it under a bushel, NO! Let your light so shine for all to see! In Hebrews 10: 32 the apostle Paul says, but recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated. Remember when you first got saved and how on fire you was to tell others what happened to you! That is the reason I like sharing my testimony so much it takes me back to the day I met Jesus out on that highway. Remember in Luke Chapter 24 how the two men were on the road to Emmaus and Jesus came along side of them and talked with them beginning with Moses and telling them all the things the Scriptures had to say about himself. And when their eyes were open to who He was, they said did not our hearts burn within us? Our hearts should burn with passion to tell others about Jesus and what he has done in our lives. When people look at us are they seeing Jesus? Are we shining for Jesus? It is a choice we must make each day. We are to take up our cross daily and follow Jesus
Hide it under a basket, NO! Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
